A leader is the one who knows the way, goes the way & shows the way – Dare to Lead from the Front. A friend of mine shared this wonderful story about Ratan Tata, the leader of the house of Tatas. For me this story sums up the genius of this man. One day many years ago, a team of Senior Engineers were driving to Nasik along with Ratan Tata for some work. Halfway through the car had a flat tyre. As the driver pulled up, all the occupants including Ratan Tata got off for a comfort break, leaving the driver to change the tyre.
Some of the Managers welcomed the break; it allowed the much needed chance to light up their cigarettes, some used the opportunity to stretch, smile and share a joke, Then suddenly one of them noticed that Ratan Tata was nowhere to be seen and they wondered aloud where he must have vanished?
Was he behind a bush? Had he wandered off to the roadside dhaba for a quick cup of tea? Was he perhaps asking the owner about the brand of tea he uses and maybe he was looking for feedback on Tata tea? Or was he mingling with some passers by listening to their stories.
None of these in fact!
While his colleagues were taking a break, Ratan Tata was busy helping the driver change the tyre. Sleeves rolled up, tie swatted away over the shoulder, hands expertly working the jack and spanner, bouncing the spare tyre to check if the tyre pressure was okay, droplets of sweat on the brow and of course a smile on his face…….
At that moment the Managers accompanying Ratan Tata got a lesson in leadership they have never forgotten. And that‘s a moment the driver of the car hasn‘t probably forgotten either- “Lead from the front.”
Great leaders are all about that….They Lead from the front….Rolling up their sleeves. Being with their front line agents who get the work done….Working as a team….Doing what they believe and not because they are watched…
